The Fastest Racket Sport in the World

World record smash – Satwiksairaj Rankireddy (Yonex)

Forget tennis. In badminton, the speeds reached by the shuttlecock defy intuition. The official match record is held by Mads Pieler Kolding at 426 km/h (265 mph). In testing conditions, Tan Boon Heong sent a shuttlecock at 493 km/h, and 2023 racket tests showed smashes exceeding 560 km/h (348 mph).

For comparison, the fastest tennis serve is "only" 263 km/h. The video shows the official Guinness World Record set by Satwiksairaj Rankireddy.

Calories, Sweat, and Lungs of Steel

Badminton is one of the most exhausting sports. A player covers about 6–7 km during a single match, performing hundreds of explosive jumps and lunges — more than twice the distance a tennis player covers in a much longer match. Heart rate intensity reaches 90% of maximum, and calorie burning reaches up to 1000 kcal per hour.

The Shuttlecock – A Miracle of Aerodynamics

Why does a shuttlecock have exactly 16 feathers? This number ensures perfect stabilization and rotation in flight. The feathers must come exclusively from the left wing of a goose (or duck) so the shuttlecock always spins in the same direction. Mixing feathers from both wings would cause instability. This design makes it the most aerodynamically "braking" projectile in the world — after a powerful hit, it loses momentum almost instantly.

Guinness World Records – Longest Rallies

Longest rallies in singles, doubles & mixed (Mini Shuttle)
  • Longest Rally: In 2023 at the Malaysia Masters, Pearly Tan / Thinaah Muralitharan played a rally of 211 strokes, lasting over 2 minutes.
  • Longest Match: 2 hours and 41 minutes (2016 Asia Championships, Yonao/Fukuman vs. Maheswari/Polii).

The video is a compilation of the longest rallies in badminton history across all disciplines.
